Light reflected from a smooth transparent surface becomes polarized. By blocking it with a polarizing filter, you can eliminate glare. A similar polarization occurs when sunlight is scattered in the atmosphere. This effect can be used in polar navigation.

Yes so here we have a beam of light projected on an interface of two media some part of it reflects while the other part refracts,

Reflected light ray is completely polarized whereas the refracted one is partially polarized here we have a polariser which is able to absorb the only component left in the refracted ray thus completely absorbing the light causing visibility

That's why polarizers wont-work on metallic surfaces.
