my personal opinion, and ive been playing this game literally 12 years just about to the day now, is that Vulpes and Lanius in lore are set for factional in fighting, and if the planned content could be there, there would be quests on it.
Vulpes would make the greater successor, but he isnt as admired by the soldier core.

Kind of always thought that the whole "legion falls apart without Caesar" idea is entirely due to Lanius being next in line.
Literally anyone else like Lucius or Vulpes would have been a better pick.
Lanius doesn't have the mind of a nation builder AND if the legion does have a Civil war after Caesar's death.
I'd bet it'd be Lucius and Vulpes VS Lanius.

With Cesear dead and no heirs to his rule, the Legion will collapse into civil war as multiple high-ranking Legion members (Lanius, Lucius, Vulpes) all will insert their own leadership. It's what always happens in human history in an event like that. A power vacuum where the strongest force take authority.

The Legion will ultimately die without Cesear. No leader could effectively replace him.
