A father recounts to his children - through a series of flashbacks - the journey he and his four best friends took leading up to him meeting their mother.

First few times I saw this part. I thought it teared up because his mom didn't make it to his wedding like she died or something. It took me while to figure out because he knew about her being sick and that she wouldn't make it to see their daughter's wedding.

Ted as a character might have flaws but Josh Radnor's acting was simply perfect

For people who dislike the ending, some of the cast did too. They filmed a lot of stuff for the final episode that didn’t make the cut.
The most important deleted scene that to this day Ted’s actor believes should have been kept in is a scene where Robin and Ted meet for lunch after Ted has been married for years.
Robin is single and sad and down and asks Ted if he ever thinks about the deal they made with each other that if they were both still single at 40 they’d get married. Ted tells her that while he still loves her as a friend that those kinds of thoughts never actually come to mind anymore. That he full heartedly believes he’s with who he’s supposed to be with and he leaves.
This should have been left in bc it really cemented how much he loved Tracy and that his going back to Robin was only something that was in his head way after Tracy had died. Even the kids says it’d been 6 years since her death.

I watched the series again last month and this scene really hit home. My wife and I binge watched HIMYM in 2016, and little did we know she'd be diagnosed with cancer the following year. She passed away 3 years later at the age of 40. It's amazing how some things don't impact you until you relate.

I wept like a baby at the end of the show. That’s SO sad….I feared she was going to pass away episodes earlier when he talked about meeting her 45 days earlier to have that “time” with her.

The thing hurt the most was a show called how I met your mother didn’t introduce the mother till the ninth and final season

The way Ted stared at Tracy just makes my cry every time. I deeply believe that Ted loves Tracy more than everything in the world, she is like a goddess and soulmate to him. It's not fair to say he just treated her like an alternative option to Robin.

Tracy was an incredible character and the perfect person to be the mother. It’s just a shame the show took so long to finally get to her, only to kill her off. Then have Ted go back to Robin anyway. After her and Barney divorce because she never grew as a character and still put work a over Barney and their family. The entire reason Ted didn’t choose Robin, and then he goes right back to her
