Man this book is legendary... Lord Soth is a straight up beast! I found this book in a box in my Uncle's closet when i was 15ish, back in 2003-2004... They said i could have it. It literally got me into Ravenloft, dragon lance, and resparked my interest in D&D and fantasy fiction period. This was an awesome review man.

This book is what got me into Dragon Lance and fantasy in general. I read Vampire of the Mists when I was maybe 12-13 and I loved it so much I bought the next Ravenloft book I could find and it happened to be Night of the Black Rose. I loved it and chased Lord Soth everywhere he’s went since his little Ravenloft arc. I’ve read this book many times over the years

Lord Soth has always been one of my favorites... His blind passion is a cautionary tale for life by not letting emotions completely control the decisions we make... I actually have a tattoo of this exact book cover… He‘s a bit more faded these days, but I feel it adds to his sense of undead terror💀💀💀

I had this book in the 90's, and a couple novels from Ravenloft, honestly I don't know what happened to them? Love to see Lord Sloth vs Strad in game and who would win? I would pick them off one by one when they nearly destroyed each other.

My post got ate? Anyway this book was awesome! There’s a great twist ending that reveals a lot about the world of Ravenloft. If you’re a fan of Dragonlance, this is the perfect intro to that campaign setting.

I find it interesting that there are only two beings that have arrived in barovia that Strahd was genuinely and legitimately afraid of… Lord Soth, and Firan Darcalus Zal’Honon the Wizard King of Knurl (better known as Azalin Rex)

I remember reading this back in the day. Soth is one of my favourite bad guys. Despite his creators not wanting him to go and or stay in Ravenloft, it is a fitting place for him to be when you consider his life and tragedy and just how bad ass he is to be able to stand up to the big bad of Ravenloft and walk away to tell the story.... Also love the character of the dwarvern were badger, as I found him equally entertaining. Anywho, just my two steels worth.

The Dragonlance setting has multiple timelines. In fact, at the point that Soth takes Kitara's corpse, there is a canon divergence in the timeline of Krynn. The Soth in Ravenloft could have been from one of tbese other timelines.

After the lord soth novels and before the war of souls you should read dragons in the archives. It's a collection of Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman short stories that are like a prelude to the war of souls the same way the second generation was a prelude to dragons of summer flame. Every story relates to the war of souls in some way. There's even a story that features lord soth before and after his change

Lord Soth is one of my favorite DL characters. I remember how cool it was back in about 1990 when I bought 2nd Ed AD&D Revenloft setting and Lord Soth was part of Ravenloft. So I'm glad to see more stories with him in it. However...
You mentioned there were inconsistencies and you were fine with them. Personally, unless otherwise stated I like to look at stories as being factual. That's partially due to the History nerd in me but also, I find factual consistency important in stories. When stories get inconsistent it's hard for me to really enjoy them because it means I really don't know what I'm reading or put in another way, It's hard to invest in a story when the "facts" and even character perspectives keep changing from book to book, author to author. That's one of things that killed the Star Wars EU for me before Disney bought it. Then Disney just killed everything about Star Wars for me.

With all that said I might have to find a copy of this book it sounds intriguing.
