I have been arguing for years that SFA need to be open this type of investment into league. I'm a Celtic fan but bigger challenge from other teams is exactly what Old Firm needs. Aberdeen and Dundee Dundee United in the 80s were outstanding in Europe too. We need that again.

It would be a great idea. The SFA need to allow this ffs. It's really frustrating because this would also help Rangers, and Celtic, and push them on also. More competition adds more of an incentive for the two main clubs to push on thus making the league stronger

Hearts 1986 and Aberdeen 1991 both came "close to winning it since", both going in to the last day of the season top of the League and blowing it in their last game. There has been quite a few seasons since 1985 also, where someone out with the Old Firm finished 2nd, although '86 and '91 are the only times a 2nd place non Old Firm club almost won the Title. Since as recently as Season 2014/15 though, Aberdeen twice, Hearts and Hibs have all finished ahead of Rangers whilst playing in the same division as them. Rangers in fact could still technically have finished 4rth going into their last game in 2017/18.

I am all for competition though in Scotland, though I don't think the Old Firm are too keen on that. As long as investors are not like Mad Vlad, who "financially doped" Hearts to a couple of Cups and 2nd place in the League, but also left them in administration eventually.

Historically tough the Portuguese League hasn't been as competitive as the Scottish one, in a sense anyway. Yes, they may have 3 clubs who win most the Titles, rather than just 2, but out with Benfica, Sporting Lisbon and FC Porto, their League has been won just twice by other clubs. (Belenenses in 1946 and Boavista in 2001). Furthermore, just 3 other clubs than those 5 mentioned, have even finished as high as second. Whereas, in Scotland, 9 different non Old Firm clubs have won the Scottish Title and there has been a further 3 clubs who have been second, without ever winning the Title. In fact there has been a surprising 78 occasions that a non Old Firm club has finished in the top two (that is counting it as being 2 occasions, if neither the Old Firm has been in the top 2 in a season), though admittedly just 19 occasions where one of them has won the Title. 49 of the non Old Firm top 2 finishers have been since Season 1934/35, when Portugal first had a league. (There has been just 11 occasions someone out with Benfica, Sporting, or FC Porto has been in the top 2 in Portugal, by contrast!)

Non Old Firm clubs have won the Scottish Title 12 times since the war and also Dundee, Aberdeen and Hearts (twice), have gone into their last match top of the League and blown it. Also, Hibs in 1953 would have won it if they had been using either goal difference, rather than goal average, or 3 points for a win!

The overall non Old Firm Title Tallies are Hibs, Hearts and Aberdeen (4 each), Dumbarton (2, one of them shared with Rangers) and 1 each for Third Lanark, Motherwell, Kimarnock, Dundee and Dundee United.

Anyway, that's enough facts and figures for now. Bloody hell, I sound like Sheldon Cooper!

meanwhile Celtic are facing the very real prospect of not finishing top 2 this season thanks to diabolical management despite an embarrassment of riches... but of course it would make sense for the SFA to look at the bigger picture instead of being mired in the past. Scottish people are among the most passionate football fans in the world and deserve a stronger and more competitive league.

I think having additional cross border cups are needed to make Scottish sides grow.
I think we should have a Celtic Nations Club Cup for all Scottish Premier sides plus sides from Wales, Brittany, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, the Isle of Man, and Cornwall. Including the Welsh sides in the English leagues such as Cardiff City, and Wrexham.
A Celtic Nations Club Cup could be on top of domestic and European football.,
UEFA allowed the English, Welsh and Irish sides to enter sides in the Scottish Challenge Cup.
In a Celtic Nations Club Cup there could be games like Aberdeen v Swansea City, Glasgow Celtic v Nantes, Rennes v Glasgow Rangers, Wrexham v Dundee United. Motherwell v Shamrock Rovers, Cork City v Dundee United, Heart of Midlothian v Cardiff City, Merthyr Town v Linfield, and Ross County v Truro City.
This would be a group stage trophy followed by a knockout stage leading to a final.
Small English sides could also be invited into the trophy
Travel would still be easy compared to trips in places like China, Australia, the USA, Canada, Mexico, India, Brazil, and Japan.
A cross border cup would allow Scottish sides to grow in different markets.
Thanks for the video.
Thanks. - Diolch. Thanks.

The SFA have no interest in teams outside Glasgow being more competitive they would have the old firm play every week if they could.

Celtic have a billionaire supporter chairman supposedly and yet we let good players slip through our fingers for the sake of a couple of million her and there. Dermot Desmond you can't take your millions with if your a real supporter get the cheque book out ffs

Totally agree. Not just one but 2 or 3 or even 4 sides who can compete. Say hearts hibs Aberdeen and a Dundee side. It’s not about club size as some of teams who compete in Europe have quite small grounds.

You get a league like that and build up teams challenging and as you say the TV rights go up as league gets better.

Scotland has great fans so it’s a great wee country to build up some other teams.

I’m a Celtic fan but am not a fan a wish there were more teams in the title race it would be so much more interesting and exiting and would make games have a lot more pressure

Something needs to happen it’s absolutely rubbish, the SFA and SPL are a disgrace, the state of Scottish football is horrific.

If the old firm were to fulfil their destiny in the English Premier League, then the SPFL would be a lot more even, if somewhat poorer.

Everytime any other team gets good players Celtic and Rangers buy them up most of the time if no one from down south takes the chance. Obviously it weakens the selling teams and makes it harder for them to compete with Celtic and Rangers. We used to be better than african countries and eastern european countries but since 90's they've all improved vastly while Scottish football has mostly stood still. The uncompetativeness of the leagues, too many leagues, too small leagues and poor management of Scottish football has seen our game stagnate. Personally I think we should have 3 Leagues a larger Prem, a small championship and a larger 3rd division. With a good sum of money being pumped into the smaller championship to make that more enticing. Also add in automatic 2 up 2 down and 3rd playoff between all the leagues. That would mean possibly new teams moving up and down frequently, make it more competative as there's more to fight for, more chances of smaller clubs getting better crowds, a really interesting and exciting championship league, and less familiarity wit playing the same teams all the time. I'd also have summer football so you'd get better and more frequent attendances, and real grass pitches won't get destroyed and damaged during autumn and winter snow and rain. That alone would save them money in maintenance, also not having to put the floodlights on as often would save money too. Tha'ts the changes I'd like to see.... I might then actually start going to football games more often. Really SPFL need to have a good product to sell and at the moment it's not good or exciting for the majority. On the odd occasion your team might get to a cup final and if really lucky they might win it.

The duopoly weakens Scottish Football. Competition brings improvement.

Someone needs to buy and merge the 2 Dundee clubs.

The SFA is protectionist ... very likely because of the influence of the Old Firm. Conway might not be right, but it would inject extra competition and that is precisely what the league needs (other than Rangers and Celtic leaving for the Premiership in England).

Wrong about no team coming close. Hearts and Aberdeen lost on final matches of seasons in 1986 and 1991

It wouldn't be difficult if they went to a playoff system. That would lead to less dominance.
