The Heat Dome- What is it?

Summer is here, with temperatures across the pacific north west of canada and the US soaring. Canada saw its hottest temperature ever on sunday of 116 degrees fahrenheit (46.6) Breaking an 84 year old record. This is all being driven by what is being called a heat dome over the area, but what is a heat dome, and why isit having such a big impact?
