When I was 14 I wanted to go to high school. But I had to quit school to go to work because I found out the hard way that my brother and I were on our own. He was 17 and took over all the bills in the house with his job. I told him I needed a place to stay and some food so he offered me a job with him doing landscaping. I hate those times because we both needed someone to take care of us. We were still kids. But we quickly had to become adults. After 21 years doing landscaping and having three kids, I tell my oldest “You don’t ever have to work with me. Go to school. Get a good job. You don’t ever have to leave, but you can. And tell me what you need for me to help you.”

That’s what I needed.

I remember my gas tank was on E and I stopped at a gas station and asked for like $1.38 on pump 4, the lady just put $5.00 on the pump and didnt accept my money. I'll never forget that kindness

When I was 14, I lived in a house with no electricity or running water during a bitter winter. My mom could only afford to buy gas for our truck. We had a fireplace, so we would drive around and search dumpsters for cardboard boxes to burn for heat so we could cook and stay warm. We kept our food in an Igloo cooler. My mom bought a package of hot dogs for dinner. Those were the best hot dogs I've ever had. Thank you mom, I miss you.

14-17 I was homeless. A woman woke me up one morning by grabbing my feet and pulling me out of the slide so her kid could go down it. I was usually gone by then it had to of been 6am. She saw how young I was and started crying. She bought me some bread and peanut butter from the grocery on the other side of the field. I never asked her name. Thank you Miss. you saved a lost child and let him raise three of his own.

Became homeless at 16 while in highschool. Survived from school lunch and the school garbage cans after school.
30 now. I look back at those times and appreciate the steaks i have once a month.
Keep going whoever you are. Nobody climbs a mountain without the motivation of death.

I ended up homeless several years back. Left an abusive relationship and ended up in a broken down camper out in the woods many miles from town. Suffered a brutal inner ear infection that made me feel like i was being stabbed in the brain with a hot poker nonstop. Eventually had enough and walked to a friend's cabin to use a phone and a relative came and picked up within an hour. I was taken to a clinic and treated for the infection, and a few weeks later i enlisted in the army. It was the only light at the end of the tunnel i could see at the time. I'm doing much better now.

I did a job for a lovely old lady one afternoon. She looked in her fridge and apologized, saying, "I'm really sorry, I can't make you a sandwich for dinner." I asked, "If I go to the store and get what we need, can you make us both a sandwich?" She smiled and said yes, so I went to the store, bought enough for a few ham salads, and filled my trolley with essentials. I asked if I could leave my shopping with her to pick up later. She called that afternoon, asking when I'd get my food. I told her to use it, as I was too far away. She broke down in tears, saying, "I know what you've done for me, thank you." Best $50 I've ever spent.

I once had to choose between spending my last $14 on gas to get to work for the next couple days or food. One of the days a coworker saw what was going on and gave me her fries so I got to eat one of the days at least

i was 21, my life was screwed up from bad life choices, my dad was letting me stay with him for free, but under the firm conditions that I had to feed myself.

You would think having a free place to live with free internet would make finding a job easy?

Yeh no. I never finished college, and no one gave a fuck for my previous work experience. To make it worse I was socially awkward so I wasn't the best at job interviews.

Once in a while my dad would throw me a pity snack. But it got so bad at one point I was 90 lbs while being five foot six.

4 months, countless failed job interviews, and I just eventually said fuck it and started my own home buisness for I realized.

"hey I cant fire myself"

Lukcily it took off, and I was finally able to feed myself. I eventually found a part time job to fuse with my home job income but now at 29 I am fully devoted to my home business and everything is going great.

People say money can't buy happiness, but hunger and malnourished sure as hell doesn't make me happy. Every day I thank God that finally something is working.

Btw if you’re hungry and don’t have much, a potato can be microwaved easily and provides a lot of essential amino acids as well as micronutrients and carbs. They’re usually really cheap and you can live on one a day for a while before you start to develop deficiencies in other nutrients

My mom kicked me out when I was 15. I stayed at the local park in an abandoned building for that summer. Ate out of the garbage, and took "showers" in the creek by the park. My friends wouldn't talk to me. Nor my older siblings. I'm so grateful for what I have now, and will never take something as simple as fresh water for granted again

Poorest I've ever been was overdraft status as a college student with a negative $432 balance after paying rent. I was working part time minimum wage ($10/hr at the time), and for the next few months, tried to get back to positive along with all other bills. It was tough and I was malnourished. Local food banks really saved me. I will never forget.

I was 17 living with my older sister 18 at an income based apt when we were younger. I had to drop out of school to watch her baby while she worked 2 jobs and we had no parental support. There was a month where we couldn’t afford power so it got cut off which meant no watching DvDs for entertainment at Day, and only darkness and candles at night. We couldn’t afford Internet or cable. We would ration Mc Donald’s Mc Doubles every day because they were only $1.09 at the time and buy a huge jug of Stars and Stripes soda from dollar tree, to us that was the equivalent of a 5 star meal. What really hit me hard though was having to run an extension cord through my bedroom window to the outside outlet just to cook ramen noodles in a coffee pot 😢, it didn’t even cook the noodles all the way but I had no choice. I’ve always referred to these dark times as the coffee pot ramen days and will tell my nephew “the child that I was taking care of at that time” about it from time to time to remind him how blessed he is to have what he has and to be grateful and humble. We’ve busted our asses so he could live a privileged life and gave him what we could never have. One things for sure, I’m NEVER going back.

To this day, I still remember one of the lowest financial points of my life. I waited and waited for my paycheck one week and eventually got the direct deposit. I sat down in my car after work, went through and paid several bills, bought my daughter a new car seat, and some milk at the store. I had 2 dollars to my name for the next 2 weeks after that. I still think about how I survived in 2015.
