I was a Blackhorse Trooper, back when the 11th was stationed at Fulda. Lots of good memories, and some not so good...that's how it goes in the military.😉

He says, "Is the grass not greener on the other side of the hill, " while standing in front of a hill with no grass on the other side, LOL. Jokes aside, if I remember correctly, you were XO back in the years we were going to Irwin every other month and for annual training (I was just an EM in B/I company/troop), and I have probably despise Irwin more than the folks who simply went through the NTC for a quick rotation

“What could you learn about the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment?”

Cuts to dramatic opening of a humvee traveling at top speed.

Cannot wait!!! Was in the 317th Engineer Battalion while stationed in West Germany from 1981-1985. Supported the 11th ACR up in the Fulda Gap area. Cav took care of their units and attached support units - NEVER went hungry, thirsty, lack of oils/fuel, whatever. Same when was part of 1st Armored Division 1985-1988 a few years later and supported 1st Cav!!!!

Been to NTC numerous times but never went up against the 11th ACR. First time at NTC was January 1985 where I learned that it can actually SNOW in the desert, and you had to take every bit of equipment you will ever need with you. There was none of that stuff that is there now - just desert until you could not see desert anymore and then there was more desert!!

Went again 7 time during the 1990s. Went in every season and they ALL sucked balls!!! But think my best rotation was my first in 1985 when the brigade I was in (19th Engineer Battalion, 194th Armored Brigade, Fort Knox, KY) had to take everything to the desert. Lived in tents and port-a-potties lined up for about 1/4-mile. Showers were from 5-gallon water cans. ONLY rule that I remember was to stay away from the condonement area for, if caught there, was supposed to be an automatic Article-15 and other punishment. My first time seeing main post was during my 2nd rotation in May 1993 when the pup tent overhead cover was in place and the restrooms/showers were the only luxuries. Next rotation in 1994 and that little PX was there and a few of those lunch trucks, or whatever they were called. 1995 and onward and the area was improved quite a bit. Live-fire and force-on-force all remained the same.

I was stationed there as an O/C with the Werewolves. One of the best assignments.

I was OPFOR for a lil bit over two years at Irwin...I was proud to be a Blackhorse trooper, carry on that proud legacy, and become a master of my profession...But man does Irwin suuuck...On the plus side, I was only 2-3 hour drive from Vegas, San Diego, or LA when we got long weekends...

When I was in High School - I was in an Army Jr. ROTC Unit.

For Spring Break - the Jr. ROTC units would go on maneuvers for a week.

In the Sp;ring of 1969 - the Army put us on buses and we went to Fort Irwin.

We fired M-14's on their range and went on Maneuvers including at night.

For us - it was fun.

After High School I enlisted in the Marines.

I did 2 rotations at NTC...while it wasn't the most pleasant, there was plenty of fun too.

MOPP 4 in the Mojave in June/July had no redeeming qualities, however.

I spent 3 years there as an OC/T on Cobra Team with OPs group. Was a blast and great experience. The grass is greener when your not the RTU.

Holy shit! D12 is the exact mbt I was on in 2021! I was the gunner for it during my last 6 months in the army. Our platoon sgt at the time named it "Dad Bod", I'm amazed that they haven't changed the name. That's nuts lol

I did 2 rotations @ NTC. Both rotations my M88a1's I was on caught fire and burned down. I got a post commanders coin and a NTC safety officers Swiss Army knife the first time.
2nd time the same safety officer walks over to me and said. Hey! I know you! Your on our safety posters! Your crew got a award for surviving your track burning down.
All I heard was "Hey your famous for burning shit down". Sigh.

Hope we get to see some of those famed endangered desert tortoises! (that's the main thing I remember from reading about the Blackhorse in Tom Clancy novels)
