Ep.53: How to Improve your Singing Voice! 5 Tips You Will Not Like!

I get questions and comments from singers on a regular basis about not liking the sound of their voices. They often want to sound like some other singer. They obsess over how to get a sound like, Ed Sheeran, Adele, Michael Jackson and others.

They want powerful voices like this or that singer. They think that if they could only sound like them, they would like their own voices and so would everyone else.

Inside this video, I’m going to give you 5 tips I guarantee you won’t like!

How to Improve Your Singing Voice? 5 Singing Tips I guarantee You Won’t Like

Tip #1 Stop trying to sound like your favorite singers.

You introduce problems into your voice when you try to sing like someone else. It hurts rather than helps your singing. Why?

You’ll never sound like them because you are not them. You’re wasting your time. You don’t have their vocal cords or their physical resonating structures that gives them their unique sound. In other words, you don’t have their gift.

When you try to make your voice sound like them, you introduce unwanted tension into your vocal cords, your larynx, your breathing, your thinking (“am I sounding like him or her?”). This makes your voice and your singing worse, not better.

Yes explore their Style, cover their songs, channel their passion and derive inspiration from their work.

Personally, I don’t connect with a singer trying to sound like someone else. But I do connect immediately with a singer who’s sharing themselves. They’re singing in their own voice and style.

The honesty and vulnerability of being themselves so completely, with their own voice and style, is so penetrating to me, that I’m captivated and inspired by their singing. The honesty is raw, real and personal. My connection to them is automatic, quick and deep.

But don’t try and make your voice sound like someone else's. We don’t want it. We don’t want to hear you trying to sound like someone else. We want you, just you.

Tip #2. Don’t be in a hurry. Be patient.

Pavarotti said in an interview that it took him ten years to develop a special quality in his voice singing “Ah” on an “F” above middle C. [Video Excerpt]

Ten years for one of the world’s greatest tenors to get the sound he wanted.

It took that long, not because he didn’t work at it. It took 10 years because that’s how long it took.

Tip #3. Don’t wait to sing or perform for others until you’re perfect.

Sing before you think you’re ready and don’t stop.

Remember Pavarotti didn’t wait to start performing until he got the sound he wanted. He developed that through constant work and performing and the sound came. The same is true with all great singers.

Tip #4. While you’re following Tips 1-3 constantly be improving, practicing, working, being passionate and sharing.

Remember the reasons you’re singing. Always revisit the reasons, the passions, the love that drives your desire to sing and perform.

Tip #5. Don’t worry about criticism.

You’ll always have people who don’t like you, don’t like your voice, or your music. You’ll always have people who love your voice and everything about you. And you’ll always have people who don’t care either way.

In summary, YOU ARE GOOD ENOUGH! YOU are who we want! We have a Michael, a Paul, a Whitney, an Adele, an Ed, a Sam, etc, etc. We don’t need another one. Please give us you! Your voice, your words, your passion. Your voice is what we want and need.

Your vocal type is what you tend to do when you sing. Go to the Knowledge Center and watch the videos about your vocal type and download the free exercises. They’re designed to help you eliminate weaknesses and build your vocal strengths rapidly.
