Why I’m Switching to the Canon EOS R (again)

The Canon EOS R has been out for over a year, and it has easily become one of the most trending cameras as of late. A lot of that has to do with the recent price drops and deals. With the price drops aside, it's taken a while for me to warm up to the EOS R, and now I am all in with two bodies and the insane 15-35mm lens! In this video, I talk about why I am switching back to Canon and why you should consider the same.

The main shot in this video is crap. I know this is ironic. We shot in 1080p on the EOS R and 4k on the Olympus. The Olympus crushes the EOS R image quality. Looks better in every way. We are aware of this. Still shooting on EOS R moving forward and will make it look better for future vids. Sorry for the crappy quality on the main shot.

Your EOS-R footage looks soft and out of focus. Your video convinced me to never switch to EOS-R!

But Dave you didn’t address the elephant in the room! The EOS R would
be a great camera if it didn’t have such a a massive crop in 4K. That in itself stops me using the camera. When I buy a full frame camera I want to shoot full frame and not have to resort to HD to get it. We are almost in 2020. I have been shoot full frame mirrorless 4K now since 2015 with Sony cameras.

Canon have to address this in the next model. If they don’t then they will continue to lose people as I really don’t believe that many people are “switching back”.

The sale price is a great deal but it doesn’t make the biggest flaw more palatable.

The main thing I got out of this video is that the Olympus has fantastic video. The side shot is so crisp.

No

YouTube - “Hey how about another one of those I switched back to Canon vids”

Speaking as a 5D IV user who’s been waiting and waiting, I think the v2 EOS R is going to be a huge release for Canon. They’ll finally move beyond the nearly 3.5 year old 5D sensor and implement all the things they learned from the v1 R. At least that’s what I’m hoping!

At what ISO were you shooting this video ? Looks pretty grainy to me..

Nikon has always been the King of lenses, not Canon. Canon is making great glass right now, and that's cool, but is not the king of lenses

Hi Dave I'm curious to know about your opinion on Nikon z6 12bit prores raw footage. How much can we push the footage, how's the Highlight, shadow recovery, highlight rolloff in proees raw in comparison to canon eos r 10bit 422 footage?

The colors and tone do look great in this video. However, I'm not sure how you can be talking about how good the autofocus system is in this camera when the camera is literally hunting back and forth during this video as you are flailing your hands and camera about. And it's only being empasized by the the fact that you appear to be shooting at or near wide open with very shallow DOF.

Because "I switched to EOS R" videos give more clicks?
And all the arguments you gave are the same as everybody's doing, I'm disapointed with the approach.
Yes, sure RF glass is great but RED's and BMPCC use EF mount so they will need to update to the RF mount, soon EF will be dead and it's not good to invest in EF glass.
And for many youtubers that want "the best quality possible" I find it so hypocrit to choose the EOS R because of color science, you also have other brands with great color science. And if you want Canon look is achievable with some color grading. Having one more stop of DR (A7III) should be a must for those of "the best quality possible" which is something you can't get in post.
Also a lot of youtubers that want the "best possible quality" they say they only need 1080p because (apparently) 4k is an overkill, that the 1080 is so good they don't need 4k. #facepalm

I’ve been with the R since it came out and it keeps getting better with all the updates and lens releases. Great all rounder and perfect B cam to the C300. How’s the RF speedbooster working out? Any chance you could share how well it autofocuses? Keen to try it with my 18-35 and modded EFS lenses but it’s a chunk of change!

What's kept me away is the huge crop in 4k. On the wide end of that 15-35mm you end up with something like ~27mm. Is everyone just shooting in 1080p and upscaling?

Mr. Dave! I appreciate your videos, very tempting, always shot canon, just switched about 3 months ago to the GH5 and loved it much I got the S1H. I look forward to future videos from you about this camera. Apart from the auto focus the Lumix are beautiful cameras. I’ll consider switching back to Canon someday if they come out with a more competitive product. The Lumix cameras with their IBIS, top mount XLR adapter, 2 SD card slots, amazing viewfinder, full frame 4K, 4K 60fps(albeit cropped) and ergonomics made it tooo tempting.

If the EOS R did the full frame 4K even 30p I would be totally interested but the crop just turns me off and then the lack of IBIS. Using dual IS is super nice. The EOS R would be more tempting if I was primarily a photo shooter.
