If the government shutdown lasts long enough, military families could go without pay. The Fort Worth Army Corps of Engineers says they'll be reevaluating the situation Monday, but for now, they're open.

Everyone should be keeping a reserve. Even if you don't get furloughed or laid off, there are things like unexpected car repairs, medical problems, and other unexpected things. The unfortunate thing is that most Americans are living paycheck to paycheck and have tons of debt on top of that. The government workers actually have it pretty good compared to the rest of us because Congress usually votes to pay them for the not working after the shutdown. If my employer shuts down (say for an electrical outage), my options are either use vacation time, make up the time later, or not get paid.
