Family's Unique Strategy Wins £1 Million on the Lottery

A family from Peterborough has struck gold after winning £1 million on the lottery, having played the same numbers since Christmas 1994. The joyous news came on June 22, when Audrey Cobb, 87, and her three children David Cobb, 67, Carol Nobbs, 55, and Sandra Digby, 60, matched five main numbers and the Bonus Ball in the National Lottery draw.
The family's lottery syndicate, led by David Cobb, has been a fixture of their lives for almost three decades. David expressed his unwavering belief in their eventual win, saying, “We’ve had some small wins along the way but I was definitely the favourite big brother when I told my sisters I was giving them each £250,000.”
The win was particularly emotional for Carol, who had faced challenging years and feared she would never own a home again.
David’s wife, Linda, discovered the win when she checked the National Lottery app the morning after the draw. She saw a message alerting them to their £1 million win and calmly informed David, who initially was too groggy to pay much attention. However, upon reading the message, David was overjoyed.
With the National Lottery phone lines not opening until later in the day, David and Linda decided to pass the time with a 10-mile bike ride before confirming their win.
David recounted the moment he shared the news with his mother and sisters. He said, “I told mum I had some good news and wanted to tell her and my sisters at the same time, she immediately said ‘have we won the Lottery,’ so my plan was slightly scuppered.”
The family then called Carol and Sandra on a group call. Sandra was at the allotment and was so shocked by the news that a fellow gardener had to ensure she didn’t faint. Carol burst into tears, knowing her housing troubles were over.
Carol has already found her new home, while Sandra plans to upgrade her VW Polo. David and Audrey are still deciding on how to use their share but are focused on benefiting the family.
The Cobb family’s winning Lotto ticket was bought online using the National Lottery app. The winning numbers were 5, 9, 18, 32, 44, and 58, with the Bonus Ball number 34.
