0-60 in ~6 secs and 165 mph top speed, in 1956 was considered amazingly fast. I was a teenager not yet old enough to drive, and like Jay, I drooled over my neighbor's 300SL. I don't know whether the mid-50s Ferrari street cars, all with V12s, were nearly as fast.
