This song looks at addiction from the perspective of the substance. From the eyes of the drug, it's not blame, since the addict is the one who came after it, and once that happens, it is just a matter of time before it gets ingested. Jonathan Davis has a long history of addiction, notably with alcohol. By the time he released this song, he had been sober for 18 years, but still felt the pull. This song addresses his struggle to stay clean.

Davis started working on this song for a solo project, but when The Serenity of Suffering producer Nick Raskulinecz heard the track, he encouraged him to record it with Korn.

"This isn't the first song written from the viewpoint of the substance: The 2005 Brad Paisley song Alcohol comes from the perspective of the drink." Jonathan Davis cites that one as an inspiration for "Take Me."
