I also talk about how to get soil samples in your yard, and sending them in for analysis. I met Mike Hall from Spectrum Analytics based out of Ohio, and he gave me some great tips on how best to pull cores out of your yard for testing.

Pretty pumped about this channel. I followed your yard journey last year and look forward to what you’re going to show us this year. I ditched my fertilizer company at the end of this past year and planning to take over myself from here on. Paul, there are tools that are much better suited for taking core samples from your yard. They are about an 1-1/2" hollow metal tube with an opening on the side of the tube to remove the cores and a T- handle on top to push it down into the soil. You can take several deep core samples throughout the yard and not leave big holes in the yard as you would do with your bulb planter that you were using. These core sampling tools are often sold at gardening centers or online.

You are right that taking soil samples and having them analyzed is an important first step so that you can find out what nutrients your soil is rich in and what it is lacking and then make a lawncare plan accordingly. Good luck with your soil tests and please share the results of those tests.Now go fill in those big holes in your yard before someone twists an ankle when they accidentally step in one. :-)

Hey Paul when you used that bulb planter to collect samples did you use the entire core it pulled or did you just collect the bottom 1" or so off each core and put the remainder of the plug back in the hole? I only ask because I know these things grab a pretty large core. Thanks for your help.
