So, I recently read a biographical manga for Satoshi Tajiri. Apparently the trading was meant to be kind of a cute thing where everyone's unique pokemon would travel and journey across people and sort of be its own identity and story, part of why you can't change the nicknames.

Massive respect! I like planning, outlining and lists! Not a programmer, but an accountant, I can still appreciate the effort for the 'fun' of it!!! I might try my hand at a living dex, but with me being a perfectionist, I would go a step further by having each pokemon at level 100 with the best moveset possible. Call it overkill, but when I love something, I really mean it.

Looking forward to how you approach this through the series!

1:52 i mean yeah. thats exactly how it should work. you have a pokemon that you can investigate and study to complete the dex entry. when you're done it doesn't matter what is happening to the pokemon.

Wow, as a “technically-inclined” person myself (have worked with databases, coded my own projects) I’ve got to say I really appreciate the amount of effort that went into this project. Well done, you’ve earned a subscriber 💖

I mean, the Pokédex is not "flawed". No one ever says that you need to "have 'em all". You just need to collect their data, which requires owning them at some point. But once you collect the data, it wouldn't make sense for that data to be lost once you get rid of the Pokémon.

side note, not only did Lyra make a website, but one that is devoid of any Framework. No React, no Next.js, just raw HTML, CSS and JS, the way Arceus intended. No wonder the website loads so fast.

I hate web-development, but you're doing it right, props!

One thing you didn't mention, which you probably figured out while doing it, is catching duplicates on your main game, to use as trade fodder. If you're going for a living dex, you don't want to be trading away your pokemon unless doing so would evolve them, and even then you'll want the evolved one back without losing another important part of your system.

Personally, I usually just use glitches to obtain the unobtainable Pokemon when playing Gen 1 (See the "Long-Range Trainer" Glitch or the "Mew" Glitch for more details) but this really lays out how much work it would take just to complete the first Pokedex! Now with 8 Gens (Gen 9 coming out later of the time of this comment), If you want a living pokedex, You're gonna have to do a Total of I don't know how many save files but a lot!

I also think there is a Reddit Subreddit where the Challenge is to complete the Pokedex as much as possible before battling the gym and progressing forward. (I can't remember the name right now)

Good choice picking Blue. Porygon is much cheaper in the Game Corner, so saves a fair bit of time getting the coins required. Nice video, by the way.

I've literally started this exact playthrough 2 days ago and then this pops up on my recommendations. Time to binge your videos for tips

Oh my gosh you are exactly my kind of person! I've been wanting to do a challenge like this for years now. A living dex for each generation, where each Pokémon is caught exclusively in that generation. I made a whole spreadsheet with each generation, and which games I'd play to catch each Pokémon but this is way better organized than my haphazard lists. I can't wait to see how you approach gen 2 not having stuff like the legendary birds or fossils in them.

Awesome channel! I started learning web development on September 7th and I was so happy the role pokemon helped me in understanding objects, data modeling, making fetch request and working with JSON data. The pokemon Api is so lit.

I like how you pointed out the actual difference between completing the pokedex as just having all the data as opposed to actually having all the pokemon and really giving the true meaning more of "gotta catch em all".
