The Harsh Reality of a Debt Free Journey

Hey TeaEOs!

The hard truth about a debt free journey is that some people will never understand the process. Striving to be debt free may be a lonely endeavor, but it is worth it. If you want to pay off debt fast even on a low income, the majority of your circle may not support you, but no matter what, you mustn't give up.

I've been debt free for several years. Yes, I've been accused of being "cheap" because there's many things I won't spend money on. Example: $100 dinners weekly. I have family members that think I'm cheap because I'm holding off on home remodeling. I drive reliable older cars, people assume either I'm cheap or poor. IDC. I sleep well at night, will be able to retire comfortably. I don't sweat unexpected expenses.

I made a cup of tea for myself and saved the teabag to reuse the next day. My sister-in-law looked at me like I had horns growing out of my forehead! She thought I was insane because I didn’t just throw away the tea bag. But, I told her, one teabag makes at least 3 cups of tea. Why would I throw it away before I was finished with it?! She just said I was weird and walked away. OK. I am weird. It’s weird that my car is paid in full. It’s weird that I have a $10, 000 emergency fund. I’ll be OK with weird

Its sad people feel they have to spend tons of money for fun. Whatever happened to going on hikes, camping, picnics, taking a bike ride, having people over for dinner and a movie.

My husband and I are debt free except our mortgage. Trust and believe we could care less what other people think! It’s not their business what we choose to do with OUR finances. Misery loves company and I don’t make good company with misery. Let people in debt hang out with people in debt. We believe debt free is the best way to be🙏🏾

This is just the affirmation I needed today. I am a single mom, and sometimes I feel like my kids are missing out on the "extras." But then I think that if I can become debt free and show them how to be smart with money early on, they will not have to struggle. They will not feel that burden of debt that used to keep me up at night. Thank you for sharing this video.

I have been on my debt free journey for the pat 3 years. 3 long years -but I am see the light at the end of the tunnel. I have no car payments, no credit card balances, and no personal loan debt. The only debt I have remaining is 86K in my mortgage - which if it goes to plan I will have paid of by next year. I don't go out to eat. I take lunch from home everyday to the office. Instead of going out with friends to bars - I envite them over (costs 1/10th of what it would cost me if I went to the local bar)

My friends think I have gone of the deep end. My family is seriously worried that I am developing some kind of depression. But you know what? Here is what the last 3 years shown me:

1. I don't need to prove to anyone else I am successful by buying status items (the name brand clothes, watches, cars, etc.).
2. Buying things to prove to everyone else that you have 'made it' or because 'you deserve it' is the quickest way to mental instability
3. Spend money on things *you* enjoy is completely worth it. I haven't gone to a restaurant in three years but bought a $3500 guitar and amp. I have been enjoying that guitar and amp every night for 3 years. I am now a pretty good guitar player.
4. You have a lot more time to increase your knowledge and learn new skill sets. I now read 2 to 3 books a week (which I get from our local library for free :) a week!
5. I learned to cook and realized how terrible 95% of restaurants are
6. You find out real quick who your friends are
7. You learn to be at peace with your self
8. You don't need 95% percent of the things you used to buy. I have really learned that I just don't need that fancy watch, the latest gadget, or that fancy car. I don't have it now and you know what ? I am doing just fine without them.
9. When you don't have a massive debt breathing down your neck - you realize you don't have to chase the corporate ladder. I now go home at 5 and NEVER work on the weekends. When I am debt free - I can comfortably live of a much less stressful and stifling job that pays a lot less. I will trade money for time. MY TIME. After all we all have 24 hours.

And the biggest lesson I have learned - A line from a Sheryll Crow song "Soak up the Sun" -- "Its not about having what you want, its about wanting what you've got"

Long post - but i have the time :)

I just turned 50 and for the first time since age 19, I am debt free except my mortgage, which I’m paying down faster.

Now I pay a extra on utilities so I’m never behind or get surprises. It’s a great relief when you have such peace.

I’m finding debt is similar to diet. When you move toward a better life and lifestyle, the people around you often don’t accept the changes. I don’t know why that is, but it’s sad

One of the best feelings is going to bed & waking up knowing you don’t owe any person, company, government debt. Which leads to greater freedoms and letting things go easier like a bad job and take more risks.

Debt frees since 2013 including home. I realize most people don’t want to hear how to get debt free. They are so caught up in their life and complaining about how miserable they are. Yet they don’t want your advice.

My home will be paid off at the end of this Month. I also paid off my car in 2018. I sacrificed a lot to get here by working a lot of overtime at my job.

Yes! Living in a larger city this sometimes looks like turning down invitations to events just because they require a $50 Uber ride each way due to parking limitations and no transit.. I’ve realized that a lot of people don’t think twice about spending $100/night on transportation alone (not even including drinks or food or tickets) because “that’s just what it costs.” No thanks!

People: Stop buying things you don't want/need to impress people you don't know. Great video, sis. I'm glad you touched on the social pressure of being debt free bc everyone doesn't understand

All facts stated in this video! I've experienced everything you mentioned and I don't have any regrets. My debt free journey was 4 years short and it's already been a year and a half since I've made that last payment. The things I was able to do after becoming debt free has been much more enjoyable. Great video 😁
