How can you make your parrot comfortable with nail trimming? What should you do if your parrot is scared of nail trims? This videos is about how to use positive reinforcement training to help your parrot accept nail trims voluntarily and not be stressed out during the process.
First, you will want a Parrot Wizard Nail Trimmer Stone:
Don't immediately start by trying to file your bird's nails. Show the nail trimmer at a distance and give treats. Do some target training in the presence of the nail trimmer. Desensitize the parrot to the nail file. Eventually target them right up to it.
Teach the parrot to give you its foot without the nail file as a type of trick training. Next, teach the parrot to give you the foot while you hold the nail file but without using it. This builds trust so that your parrot isn't afraid of the nail file or you applying it. Now all it takes is some gentle practice touching the nail file to the nail, eventually making small motions, and gradually working your way up to effective filing motion to trim the nails down.
