Blackness Castle, Filming location for Outlander, Outlaw King, Mary Queen of Scots
Standing looking out over the Firth of Forth near Edinburgh is the impressive Blackness Castle, often referred to as 'the ship that never sailed' due to its ship-like shape. This 15th century fortress provides the setting for the Fort William headquarters of Black Jack Randall, as well as featuring in the heart-wrenching scene of Jamie's incarceration.
The whipping scenes in episode 6 of Outlander were filmed at Blackness Castle ( Substitute location for Fort William Castle ) which overlooks the River Forth west of Edinburgh.
Filming location was in the courtyard of the castle to the north east of the centrally placed keep.
The outside of Blackness Castle (with a bit of CGI) appeared in episode 8 of Outlander as Fort William.
Other movies shot here include Doomsday.
