Of course they don't like sand. Its course, its rugged, and it gets everywhere.

There may not be anything in the desert, but oh boy, wait til they find out what's under the desert.

Lawrence: "Do you know King Faisal?"
Faisal: "Well, of course I know him! He's me!"

There's a sadness conveyed through Prince Faisal's words " no man needs nothing" and " my father is old".Makes me tear up a little.

Alec Guinness would probably be pissed to see all the Obi Wan references in the comments.

He didn't hate Star Wars, he just hated that people knew him for that the most

"because we are a little people, a silly people, greedy, barbarous, and cruel", what Lawrence said to Sherif Ali at the well. Great little touch I missed.

Over the course of 2 1/2 minutes there are only 5 shots cut into this scene. The last shot spanning 1 minute 1/2. Incredible directing and courage not to cut the performances to death.

"A young English called Lieutenant Lawrence, who was a pupil of mine before he turned to bloodshed, helped the Arabs hunt down and destroy the Ottoman Turks. Lawrence was seduced by the Cleanliness of the Desert. And his mother mated with a scorpion."

Seven Pillars of Wisdom, my favorite book I might add, puts Prince Faisal's line in its appropriate historical context. "The English have a great hunger for desolate places."

Prince Faisal was quoted by Lawrence as elaborating. The English hunger to colonize desolate places, build them up and exploit their natural resources to satisfy Britain's appetite for empire.

This footage is incredible, and the restoration and DI are immaculate. One of the best lit scenes in cinematic history. I love how Freddie Young keeps King Faisal's face in the shadows as he turns away from Lawrence and looks past the camera. That lighting emphasizes the doubts in his mind about what course of action to pursue. Notice, conversely, how brightly lit Lawrence is, and how the light changes on Faisal's face as he moves around in the scene. Two of the greatest thespians in film history, together in an unforgettable scene, and Robert Bolt's dialog is Shakespearean in it's effect. This scene could not have been made more perfect.

Later in the movie Lawrence explained why he loved Arabia and the desert. “It’s clean.” He said.

“There is nothing in the desert... and no man needs nothing...”

“What was that?”

“Just something from a film I like.”
