I was talking to a student of mine yesterday about it! People really don't know the meaning of the Holidays anymore, it's all about gifts, status on social networks and that's all. I have 3 sisters, they send friendship day cards. I also get friendship day cards from them (I'm not a cards sending type myself). So yeah, you can send them anyone you care a lot.
BUT it could be romantic feelings too, if you are usually not close with that person, but decided to send the card anyway. But yeah, that's not the reason why people usually send friendship day greetings.
