Dated to circa 1769, this monumental picture is one of the largest Stubbs painted and one of the last on this scale of any subject to remain in private hands.

Stubbs achieves a beautifully balanced composition through the arrangement of his subjects. In this picture, the artist shows a group of five horses seeking shelter beneath the over-hanging branches of an oak tree.

George Stubbs, A.R.A. (1724-1806), ‘Mares and Foals in an extensive landscape’. Estimate: £7,000,000-£10,000,000.
