President Vladimir Putin told newly arrived ambassadors on Tuesday (November 5) that Russia remained committed to mutually beneficial cooperation, but wanted a fair world order.
Putin, who met newly appointed ambassadors from across the world, including Japan, Canada, Italy and Israel, said Russia was against "illegal" sanctions and restrictions.
Earlier on Tuesday the Russian RIA news agency cited Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov saying Russia would appoint a new ambassador to the United States in due course if Washington remained ready to maintain contacts.
The previous ambassador, Anatoly Antonov, ended his assignment last month. The Kremlin said on Oct. 7 that a new ambassador would be appointed, dismissing speculation that relations with Washington were being downgraded.
