Strava *Deleted* FATMAP | Join the Fight to Save It!

Despite announcing that some features would be integrated, Strava has yet to address the concerns of tens of thousands of users. With the October 1st, 2024 deadline fast approaching, we are worried about losing critical functionalities, including slope layers, winter satellite imagery, snow depth, and avalanche slope color grading—features essential for safe navigation in mountainous winter terrain.

I'm sure most of the community here has heard about this and many of us are saddened to lose our beloved mapping software. I just started a petition regarding this matter, so please take a look at what I've gotten together if you too care about this change. You can find a link to the petition near the beginning of this post.

I will also be uploading a YouTube video to my channel Subalpinism shortly regarding this devastating news and inadequate communication. This video will go even more in depth about this topic and hopefully draw some more attention to this issue.

Please feel free to share this petition! Hopefully we can gain some traction and be heard by whatever idiots over at Strava have been overseeing this transition.

Even if nothing actually happens, Strava should definitely take some serious heat from the community for buying, scrapping and trashing our beloved mapping resource. These kinds of take-overs by faceless tech corporations should meet resistance!

Signed the petition & thank you for the wonderful rant! FATMAP is the GOAT. I've spent thousands of hours using the software for safe backcountry travel and even for learning the ins and outs of some of my favourite ski resorts. It would be a massive disappointment and a poor business decision if they go ahead and delete all of the community content, routes, winter imagery and layers without a reasonable integration effort.

What a shame! We live in a world ruled by social apps and this is what exactly happened. All the usefull features of fat map such as gradient filter doesn't exist anymore. I was using fatmap a lot for planning my ski touring tripsnow I find myself with a huge lak of information. What a shame. I would have prefered way longer to by for fatmap rather than subscribe to Strava.

Thank you for pushing this, so many large companies just buy out another to fill in there missing features and do not care about the smaller user groups.

Caltopo is great even without the 3d views. I'll never go back after using Caltopo. I can't stans the Strava interface.

Totally agree, it’s stunning why FatMaps is not available on Strava. They keep telling me they transitioning it into Strava but I cannot find a single major European mountain which FatMaps was great at 3-D terrain mapping. What is going on ?

I tried to write to STRAVA, asking them about the 3D Maps feature like the message you shared. I asked about the free access and also got a reply in this manner, with general information referring to the Q&A not answering about the free aspect... Really a bummer...

I took my Fatmap subscription in March 2024. At that point they didn’t do individual subscriptions. I had to take the Strava/Fatmap annual subscription. Now they don’t want to give me a prorated refund. "Your Strava subscription was purchased via FATMAP and includes Strava, FATMAP and Recover Athletics. Strava subscriptions are not eligible for the prorated refund mentioned in the FATMAP".

Am I the only one that is mad?

I immediately cancelled Strava when it was clear their tiresome social media app was not going to grow up and offer a serious navigation tool for skiers.

I really need FatMap back, it was useful. Strava is actually making the mountains unsafer with this decision. Fatmap was an useful planning tool that would really come in handy for lowering risks and planning with a higher degree of precision. I hate Strava with my whole life.

They are savages. They bought it just to kill it. Shame. I am furious at them. This was the only app I ever needed, it had everything I need - great touch navigation/control, fast on and off-road route calculation, GREATEST EVER 3D, etc. They should be taken responsible for that app killing! It is against all of us the former users of it.
