Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease

Показать описание
Each year thousands are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Health experts at Lee Memorial Health System say the patient will often have the disease for a few years before showing signs.
Dr. Wendy Bond, a neurologist with Lee Memorial Health System, says tremors and difficulty walking are typically the first things patients with Parkinson’s disease notice. However, she says there are several symptoms that will occur before the tremors, like fatigue, depression, anxiety, even some memory loss.
“Parkinson’s disease is caused by a loss of dopamine within the brain. When you have a loss of the dopamine it produces a loss of motor symptoms, particularly difficulty walking, you have instability, rigidity, either on the right side or the left side and it can also produce a resting tremor” said Dr. Bond.
That was the case with Joe Tenton. He was 39 years old when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. “It started out, my brother-in-law came over to my house and he saw me limping and he said Joe why are you limping? I said, I don’t know. Within a few months after being diagnosed, it went to my right side and I had tremors and then it went down to my left side. My hands lock up, my arm locks up, and I can’t even move my fingers.”
Dr. Bond says Parkinson’s disease is unilateral, often causing stiffness on one side of the body first. As the disease progresses, patients can develop a change in their facial appearance and have trouble with their handwriting. While the cause is unknown, Dr. Bond says genetic testing can be done to determine if someone has early onset Parkinson’s disease.
