Debussy & Larry Clinton – Rêverie (1890) & My Reverie (1938)
Anatole Plotkin, tenor Dimitri Sogoloff, piano
Debussy’s “Dream” is a perennially popular piece with pianists and listeners alike, capturing the trance-like state invoked by the wave-like patterns in the base part and shifting harmonies above.
Larry Clinton, a popular composer (“Heart and Soul”, “You Go To My Head”), produced an arrangement in 1938 that was beautifully sung be Bea Wain and accompanied by the composer’s own orchestra. It was widely covered by Bing Crosby, Glenn Miller, Tony Bennett, Sarah Vaugh, Betty Carter, Sonny Rollins, Dizzie Gillespie and Ray Conniff, but it was Ella Fitzgerald who on her 1961 album “Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie!” kicked it into its highest level of popularity.
