It's been pretty clear to me for years that political and economic ideology in Russia is almost always window dressing for the underlying reality of autocracy. Power for power's sake at any cost and by whatever means necessary.

The day after Assad fled Syria a daily Newspaper which was very pro Bashir Assad and his Daddy before him " all of a sudden saw the error of its ways" by publishing an apology to the Syrian people.

All very well, but that turncoating only seems to kick in when someone has lost power, not as an ingredient in kicking them out of it. I fear the lesson Putin and his cronies will take is pay any cost to remain the exclusive governing class in Russia. And if a large number of ordinary Russian get to pay the price, that's a price Putin will be happy to pay.

Morning K. I'm working this Saturday morning, but couldn't resist watching this latest video. I always considered Yeltzin as a buffoon, as I couldn't work out where his loyalty really was, apart from to himself. I liked Gorbechov (please excuse any misspellings) I think he wanted to modernise Russia, even if it was to follow a USA mark II model. He seemed a genuine guy, as much as you can understand from the little you see. Putin is like a card shark. You know he wants to win, and he will throw as many of his, and others chips into the pot to beat everyone else, but you know he will lose with his weak hand in the end.
