UK riots: 'Standing army' and 'revamped justice system' to tackle violence

Riots in UK cities over the weekend were "pure violence" and had nothing to do with protests, the prime minister has said.

Sir Keir Starmer said police would now have access to a "standing army of specialist officers" to deal with rioters and the criminal justice system would be "revamped" to cope with the expected arrests, prosecutions and jailing of offenders.

He was speaking after a COBRA emergency response meeting to the violence that broke out in several towns and cities over the weekend.
