Eklavya was the prince of the hunter tribes of Hastinapur. He aspired to be a disciple of Dronacharya and become a great archer but was turned down by him since he was of a lower caste. Despite this Eklavya worshipped Dronacharya and taught himself archery. After a few years when Dronacharya discovered that Eklavya was better than his own students he asked him to chop off his thumb as guru-dakshina.
