Did you know this about JAWS

Did you know this about Jaws? The titular shark was actually supposed to be in the movie a lot more. Multiple mechanical sharks were produced, and they weren’t cheap either at $500,000 per shark. But the animatronic sharks, which were nicknamed “Bruce” by the crew, malfunctioned so often and ended up looking so non-threatening on camera that the director Steven Spielberg instead decided to barely show the shark at all, which ended up adding to the film’s tension.

It wasn’t Steven that said not to show the shark as much, it was his editor for the movie. Spielberg, gives full credit of the movie to his editor, Verna Fields, because she saved the film.

Another fun fact when John Williams played a sample of that now iconic tune, Spielberg thought Williams was trolling him because it's basically just two notes. But Williams implored Spielberg to trust him, and the rest is history.

"Uhh the animatronic characters here, do get a bit quirky"

Main character of the movie rarely shows up. Cool.

The scariest thing about a shark isn't seeing it near you but knowing its there and not being able to see it.

They did the same thing with aliens.

Very similar to how Ridley Scott chose to “just barely” show the Xenomorph in The original Alien. Keeps the audience wondering where it is which definitely adds to the tension of the sci-fi horror classic. Definitely works in Jaws too

This is why Spielberg became the modern Hitchcock for one film. Spielberg after become richer from his earlier films focused more on special effects. He learned from this movie that it's not the creature that's scary, it's the idea behind the creature that scares us

I went on a universal tour where they explained that Bruce was tested in freshwater and when they actually brought him to the salt water Bruce couldn’t handle it and it short circuited

I believe that hiding the scary part of any movie, adds so much to it. Just showing glances of parts of it, it makes it really good

This movie changed my life and started my obsession with sharks, and the movie itself. Was awe inspiring on the big screen !

Spielberg chose to name it after his lawyer because the shark was “a pain in the ass”

Growing up my best friends father helped to build this monster of a shark. It was awesome getting to see some of its mechanical parts. It did help make the shark not seem so scary after knowing how it was made.

Wow, I never knew the shark was animatronic. I always thought it was a real shark.

Yes, I did know that. I read an article about the making of the film around 1980ish. It was either a cinema magazine or Popular Mechanics.

The commentary on the film actually goes into a lot of depth about this... it went a lot deeper than this.

Amazing groundbreaking film
I would pay to go to a theater and watch it again.

Fun fact: one of the Bruce mechanics took on too much water and busted causing it to sink. It sank too quickly and too deep to be recovered leaving it where it lay. So if you're luck or unlucky enough you may run into Bruce himself on a scuba dive

Straight up the story about the making of Jaws is so entertaining it would make a great biopic film!
