No, it may have a meaning that sentient beings just don't understand. Meaningless to us perhaps, but not necessarily meaningless to something we can't comprehend that operates on a macro or micro level we can't interact with or even imagine, even as a concept. What if the entire visible universe was empty of sentient life as we know it, but constituted an active protein-like part of something (analogous) to mitochondria in a cell-like construct of a semi-aware entity on a vastly higher macro level? ... and this micro to macro relationship went 'upwards' and 'downwards' ad-infinitum?...and we never knew the 'reason or meaning' why. Does us not understanding it make it meaningless? It's not a given. If you wiped out all intelligence on earth it would leave all plant, fungi and bacterial life unaffected. Would the world then be meaningless? Maybe from an anthropomorphic philosophical point of view. Maybe. Honestly Brian, you've never been the same since leaving the Beatles.

You're making the assumption that this planet has to mean something. A meaningless earth or universe is not so bad. Just let "is" be "is" without reading into it. By doing so, you relieve yourself of the anxiety and frustration of trying to figure out what the meaning of all this is...something you'll never achieve. Ridding yourself of the notion that you have to find meaning in something actually allows you to enjoy it for what it is instead of what you want it to be.
