Today I'm sharing the first of a few experiments trying out a wonderful new tool that I hope to use in my future abstract landscape series: Of Flint and Chalk.
This simple exercise can be used with the 'card swipe methof too, or applied with a stiffish flat brush if you don't have a catalyst wedge

Lois, I have been binging on your videos today. Abstract landscapes have been what I’m compelled to paint lately and I am just so glad the YouTube algorithm finally figured out what I’m looking for! Brilliant, beautiful and so inspiring! Thank you for sharing your methods and tips with such detail and clarity.

I love this abstract! It is inspiring for me to do one too! I don't have a tool like that but I do have a pallet knife to use, credit card, brushes. So I will get started now.

Thanks for showing us this tool. I wondered what they were called! A bit like a card but different. I see it has three straight sides to choose between. Have to try one!!!

I love the book you keep with your experiments and your notes. I would love to know more about how to put a book like that together.

Amazing tool! There are silicon spatulas for cooking with a smaller size that could be used. The method is brilliant for landscapes; it is as if the artist relies on forces of nature. Isn't it copying the way the terrain itself was made? Which gives us the unmistakable feeling of freedom. Thanks!

Such an evocative painting. It really speaks to me. Makes me feel as though I am sitting on a dune on a cold winter day with the wind blowing sea spray and sand in the air. It’s quite lovely

This is my favorite way of painting now, and thank you for introducing me to this intuitive, creative, and fun style. Your abstracts are beautiful and to me, your most magical and creative watercolors. With gratitude …

Brilliant experiment. I prefer my credit card or palette knife for making and spreading the watercolor paint.

Great idea to put it in a large Sketchbook! I am usually intimidated by them. But when the actual paintings get glued in, with the wrting next to it, I think I could handle that.... I can see that the silicone tool feels somewhat unwieldy. And I also see much loss of paint... Maybe one of those kitchen silicone squeegies that are used for baking could be less clunky.
Thank you for that great tutorial!

Hallo Lois, You will find different silicon spatulas ( ****best with wood or plastic handles ) in any cooking kitchen section , seperate silicone parts and Bingo ! You have smaller catalist wedges that will fit your great small arts. I`m telling it by my own practice and experience with that small c. wedges Great ART.

I love your abstracts and the idea of having a book where you keep the experiments and notes. I tried to follow along your videos but my paintings come out overworked and somewhat stiff. Perhaps I am focusing too much on the finished image that I want to get. Thank you for all your videos. They helped me advance with watercolors.

Hi Lois, what's the benefit of a catalyst wedge over a credit card?

What about using an out of date credit card . Pouring acrylics uses these for painting abstract images ?
