Chief Engineer is the head person responsible for Engine room or Engine department. He is HOD for engine department. His decisions / orders are final for Engine department. Then comes Second Engineer he assigns jobs to other engineers and engine ratings, his is responsible for correct working and maintenance of Engine room machineries. Third Engineer and fourth engineer perform maintenance work on their designated or assigned machineries. they are responsible for their machineries and also performs other jobs assigned by Chief Engineer or Second engineer.

Engine cadet or TME is trainee onboard whose purpose is to learn and assist other engineers onboard and gain knowledge to become a good engineer. ETO or Electro Technical Officer is person responsible for all electrical related machineries any fault electrical related will be dealt by ETO he is also responsible for the maintenance of all electrical equipments. Fitter from Engine ratings is head for Motorman and Wiper. His duty is to perform any maintenance job which requires fabrication work. Motorman and wiper are assigned jobs by second engineer and also assist in engine room maintenance work.
