I did read the books long before the Peter Jackson movies, but the movies helped me pace the events in the book better. Listening to this (my 5th or 6th reading), I made myself slow down. What is presented in-movie is a long, rough journey; here, it's almost impossible. So many battles and sleepless nights, that Frodo's inability to recover really makes more sense.
Tolkien was a WW1 vet, probably saw much of that.

Listening to this chapter I remembered something that bothered me all those years ago when I read this for the 1st time. How in the hell did Gollum get into moria? Was he inside before they got there, anticipating the fellowship to go that way or perhaps just deciding to spend time there checking a familiar environment for a new place to live... because trying (and failing) to imagine Gollum sneaking up the narrow path between the pool and the cliff face with the 9 members of the fellowship trying to figure how to enter and then what... he runs up during the pandemonium avoiding bill running away with sam chasing him directly towards the flailing tentacles of the pool monster and he avoids being grabbed and pulled into a watery death and into the passage behind pippin as the door crashes shut ... and then Gandalf turns to check the door and... um... simply missed him shaking on the floor having just missed death by monster/crushed in doorway... um ok

The only adaptation that the Lord of the Rings needs …. This narrator was made for this story

Reading, or listening to, the actual book, highlights how the Jackson films are only a pale shadow of The Real Thing.
The films were particularly irritating in the way Frodo was depicted as always being afraid and falling over. In the novels, he gets out his weapons and fights.
Merry is much older than Pippin, and he is notably intelligent. Neither of them is a dopey teenage thief.
Though there is far too much of people "weeping" or bursting into tears. Guys, just get a grip.

Wait if Moria is the Elvish name for it, why does Gimli call it by that name when he recounts his Dwarvish song. Maybe that's just the way it's translated to common tongue, it just surprised me is all

Did Gandalf make the right choice to go to Moria? I wonder if the plainer roads would be better. The fellowship would be safer going close to Isengard surely… Not much in middle earth could stand up to them. “There are some stout folk here with us” probably my favourite line from this chapter for some reason 😅 thoughts?

Better than the movie, of course of course

By far, the Moria is the best part of the history

"We may have to go through Moria" "But there is danger in Moria" "We may have no other option but to go through Moria" "I will go with you to Moria" "Who else will go with me to Moria?" "I'd rather not go through Moria" "We are all going to go to Moria"...

I say, this whole book has just been me shouting "get on with it!" at my phone.

I really enjoy this narration but the hero-wars ads really suck.
