An empty board like that could possibly save a bunch of games from being trashed. I'm definitely here for that.

RIP that save though. Without the battery all the data whittled away.

Custom boards are always fun. That one you've got looks like a HASL finish. Those contacts will oxidize and make a poor connection over time. ENIG finish will withstand the test of time far better. All the best!

I'm still calling this an original cartridge

I have to wonder how well this sort of thing will hold up, given that the originals had either gold or gold plating on the vias, pin contacts, card edge, etc.

Pro tip, it's good practice to bake boards before major rework like this especially when there's water exposure. Slowly get them to about 100c over an hour and keep them at 120 for a few hours to ensure there is no moisture in any of the ICs. Some ICs absorb moisture and the internals will pop kinda like popcorn if the moisture is rapidly heated to rework temp. Very sensitive ICs can absorb the humidity in the air and require baking anytime they are heated to soldering temps. Lastly ceramic caps are also very sensitive to rapid temperature changes, their protocol is to ramp up to 100c at 2-4 degrees per second, then you can use soldering temps. So you can go right from baking to rework and rework will be a bit easier with a preheated board.

If you sell it make Sure the original pcb is included!

An alternative to using a hot air gun when resoldering the parts is using an electric griddle. As long as the temperature can get to around 375 f you should be okay. I did this in college and made life a lot easier. I used solder paste like glue to pull the pieces in place while I arrange them. Place the board on the griddle, turn it on to max heat and wait for all the solder to melt.

I was wondering for some of your repairs if it wasn't easier to just replace the whole board. Glad to see it's actually a thing!

This is so cool! Does the heat gun do the soldering without an iron?

The new board is clean and looks awesome!

This is really cool, I think I'd like one of these for my copy of Pokemon Stadium 2 which I 'think' there's some sort of scratch somehow, and I don't think I can diagnose it, but I have a soldering iron so, if I could take all the chips off and put them on, that'd be cool

I got to say, using your normal voice instead of that fake youtuber radio voice is a upgrade I didn't know was needed!

I didn’t even know you can buy those little boards separately 😅
