I’d have pushed farther out to sea I think. Make them come out and meet you on your terms and bunch all together.

What I suspect happened with the Harpoon attacks: the Harpoon can fire in BOL (bearing only launch) mode, which means it flies to a predetermined spot, then activates its radar seeker and looks for a target. The Snogg corvettes could get a bearing on any of your ships that were using their radars, then relayed the bearing to the firing ships that were safely hidden on the far side of the island. Modern surface warfare is as much a game of hide and seek as submarine warfare.

One corvette with zero interceptors and anti ship missiles going out into the Atlantic is hilarious to me.

Im personally of the mind that you should try this scenario again with the lessons taken from this.

Hi Stealth.

My two cents...

Figure out your threat axis. In this case, it was to the SE where those Harpoons were coming from.

Your Nanutchkas are much like the enemy missile boats. Use them that way. Keep them scouting out front. In this case run them full speed at the Snoggs until you see them or they light up.

As for the rest, the Kynda should be at the back of the threat axis with the bulk of her escorts arranged ahead of her along that axis.

When things go hot, only the Kynda radiates. Yeah, she's the prime target, but since she has the best SAMs, well.

But the enemy missiles have to overfly the other escorts to get there, giving much better odds for an intercept.

Use only air search radar on Kynda. Use surface search only on other ships and only as needed.

am i the only one who expected stealth to say "unlike Ultimate admiral dreadnaughts" when he mentioned that the ships had collision avoidance

30:26 the radar horizon of a radar mounted 60ft above sea level is 9.5nm. Detecting them at 12 is somewhat generous for you compared to what the actual formula is.

Radar horizon is due to curvature of the Earth and the target being “below the curvature” at a certain distance. The way to mitigate this is to mount radar high up like an AWACS.

There is absolutely no way to approach so close to norways coast in 1980 without eating a bunch of penguins....

When your missiles are heat seakers - having a boat on fire is an huge decoy!

If you are looking for scenarios there was a shooting war between the US Navy and Libya in 1986, where the Libyan leader was mad enough to order air and naval assets to fire. Libyan navy lost several vessels and shore based sam sites were struck plus there was sometense duelling beetween tomcats and mig 25. There were several us carriers involved but you could limit the air for scenariopurposes and focus on the surface group that triggered the “red line”, which was a ticonderoga, a Kidd and ASpruance. Dont know if you can depict the libyan coastline but their navy had a british built vosper frigate, a coupleof Koni and some nanuchkas, osas and la combattante types plus some foxtrot submarines that they could have got working. Loads of civilian traffic and weapons tight rules of engagement. Losing a surface ship would have been pretty unacceptable…

Norway was one of the founding partners of the Sea Sparrow naval sam program to get a low cost surface to air missile for small warships.
And i think the Oslo class is the smallest warship that carried Sea Sparrow.

" ALL BATTLESTATIONS WEAPONS FREE " at the moments of the first combat your fleet should be at that level

Really the Norwegians should have at least one if not more Kobben Class Subs as well. The RNN had 15 of these subs in the 80s and really where else would they be operating if not as pickets defending the Norwegian coastline and Sea? Glad to hear you will be flipping the roles. I think it would be interesting to play as the Norwegians. Must admit I was rooting for the Vikings!

Can't see how one little Russian ship getting through is going to be any threat by itself. Anything less than three ships getting through should be considered a defeat personally.

17:46: Wasn't that how Russia got banned from the Suez Canal during the Russo-Japanese war?
18:33: Ground clutter. The missiles are getting tons of electronic noise from it that are making it difficult for them to track their targets.
22:25: AGM-119 Penguin. Its a relatively short range, helicopter launched ASM. Fast as it uses a rocket motor as opposed to a turbofan, but lacks the range of most ASMs.

Stealth, all you need to do is spin this the right way. I saw 100% perfect Russian missile defense. After all, all incoming ASMs were destroyed. LOL

Thanks for the content :)

As a self-proclaimed armchair-Admiral, i say this russian taskforce is missing a Foxtrott or Romeo-Class Sub sneaking ahead.
But that's only my personal view.

Interesting scenario, I'm curious how much of a difference even a single helo could've made. Also, considering how dangerous this area is I wonder if the Soviets would've provided something like a Slava Cruiser to protect the entire force.

Not sure how feasible counter launches over the Fjords would've been.

You should be putting your ships in high speed manuever patterns when missiles are fired on them. Multiple reasons, 1, Harpoons are simply fired on your known position relayed by a forward unit. They don’t actually see you until they’re relatively close, which means, you may be able to manuever outside of their radar cone if you do it as soon as you spot them. The other reason is Harpoons are not very manueverable, they can actually be fooled by last minute “jukes” from small patrol boats. Large ships not so much, but it should still help the situation a little bit.

Overall, not having your ships travel in an exact straight line and making slight unpredictable adjustments can be enough to have someone send Harpoons out to the wrong spot. Also, changes in speed can help too, which changes the amount of lead the missile needs to hit.

I think either pushing out farther to sea, or going deeper into the fjords are things to try, but not having a unit with a helicopter to spot for the Russians made this very hard. Especially considering given as close to the Norwegian coast the Russians were operating, the likelihood of Norwegian air assets spotting you would have been likely.

You used the ships in your fleet that lack any sort of defense as pickets, are you surprised you lost?
