I believe the Nightmare Critters were targeted towards teens. I’ve commented this on hundreds of other videos and I’m really tired so I’ll keep this one short
1-The whole toy line seem more edgy and most adults think that teens like edgy things
2-The descriptions use phrases that teens use like “The type of person to unlike the Smiling Critters which were simpler
3-Icky Licky’s scent is coffee. Kids don’t drink coffee. But teens do

I’m gonna be honest I was a little disappointed with the chapter 4 teaser trailer mainly because it was just a smiling critter eating all day which yeah we already know that they eat each other, but they tease some other things in the trailer like that little box that we’ve been wondering about for a while now But in my eyes, I don’t really think it was a teaser trailer because we already know that the toys eat each other

This new wave of toys makes sense. The Smiling Critters were designed more for younger kids and babies, but these Nightmare Critters toys were most likely meant to appeal to older kids like teenagers and possibly even young adults.
