Prototype Parts | The Secret Ingredient for DH MTB Kids

Downhill mountain bike racing is a tough sport for kids because many of the bikes and components are designed for adults. Elo unboxes and installs prototype components designed specifically for kids! Comment below if you'd like these components to go into production!

Elo is now 4'8" and weight about 70lbs. He's just big enough to ride the very smallest downhill bike we could find, a Norco Aurum HSP with 27.5" wheels in size XS/S. This bike is awesome for kids, but there's one component that we've not been able to get right.

The major manufactures produce crank arms in three different lengths, 165mm, 170mm, and 175mm. Elo's DH bike came with 165mm SRAM carbon cranks, which were still too long for his little legs. Downhill bikes have a wider bottom bracket, so unfortunately cranksets designed for trail bikes will not fit on a downhill bike.

Elo reveals the new parts and demonstrates how to remove the old cranks and install the prototypes. Good thing his SRAM DUB bottom bracket was in need of replacement because the prototype Samox M7J DH cranks require a 30mm diameter bottom bracket.

With these cranks installed, Elo won the first major downhill race of the 2023 season, NWCup round 1 at Dry Hill Bike Park in Port Angeles, WA. He'll be running these cranks for the remainder of the season.
