From the angle of the job seeker, social media is a place to express ourselves and be free and mingle, share ideas, learn things, network and all the beautiful things that come with social media...but even then, social media should be handled with care and in moderation. Social media is now used by some for bullying, harassing, insulting strangers for no reason, I can understand constructive criticism and general polite banter but there are levels to these things. The word is Moderation. As the employer, trust me, in this day and age, I am going to look you up on social media to see what your are about outside the professional space.this is not to judge you but as a hiring manager, I want the best employees who can give their best and come to work in an environment where they thrive...so I want to hire someone that will support that cause.that also doesnt give me the right to go for digging deep inside your social media, No!...you have a right to do silhouette challenge, it shows me u r confident, but where I will focus on is your treatment of others. If I am ok with that then we are good and u can do the job. I am not judging you based on social media, I am learning about your personality in an open space to see if our values align! Anything you dont want employers to see, delete! While you have a right to air your opinion, neutrality and fairness should be key.
Last last if you must show your craze and express yourself freely on social media and be the real you, do all the challenges, and all the booty things and do Gbagbos on twitter then you must be proud of what you are presenting to the world if not, you open another account for the Solemn you...then you will have multiple personality disorder!... Moderation and Neutrality and respect.you cannot stop employers from checking. People got jobs off social media soooo... you are now angry that they r using it to disqualify

Amazing! In these era, SM is the next audit check to basically everything one does. So as much as it’s your space to be liberal, it’s also a space to be scrutinized. As for the job, as far as her utters (Or texts) do not border on hate crimes, racist comments or terrorist threats, I don’t see why she should not get the fair interview. Unless the role is that of a Public Relations officer then she’s gon be screwed 😂. The main thing is to find out is she’s fit for the role, shikena.. like I said a bad mouth and a hateful/treacherous personality are two different things.. one needs better upbringing, the other needs HELP!

I would make a screen shot of the social media interaction, hand it in to the recruitment team and ask to be excluded from the process.
The hiring team would have to make the decision without my input.
Having said this, I would be worried about this person's potential to be a good team player. One of the things that makes a good team player is their ability to allow and respect others opinions and ideas, even when different from yours.

Well said. Your social media is part of your personal brand and you never get a 2nd chance to make a first impression. So it's important to have a digital footprint that aligns with the kind of personality you want to put forward.

Rule of thumb, google yourself when searching for a job and see what comes up… To your question, really it’s about hiring the right fit for a role and that goes beyond your technical abilities only. Your social media persona if not entirely accurate, provides a bit of insight into who you are. Don’t let that insight leave hiring managers with making difficult decisions about you… Great video Faith…

Nice one👍🏻
In my opinion,
your social media posts should include information you want to show to the whole world…. And then, your employers aren’t excluded…😅

I think it’s all relative…In my opinion the interview should hold regardless of their differences. This cyber bully might not even be the best fit for the job at the end of the interview process. Even if they do end up getting the job, like you said “you are you” A badly behaved person always show themselves, which might be the reason they can’t hold down the job eventually. You don’t want to be a blocker to someone’s daily bread because of a social media fight. Plus this social media bullies think everything is banter not knowing there are consequences.

To be honest, we now live in a world where our social media lives are being interpreted as our everyday lives. It should not be the case but it is. For instance, you try to get a reservation for air bnb and they want your social media account to see the kind of person that is coming into their home. Employers also want to see if you would be a fit for the culture in the workplace. So it has become interchangeable. It is what it is. I personally don't like to comment on random social media posts especially if you work in a professional environment.

For me, I agree that one should be civil on social media. You just don't go about insulting strangers, it's very irresponsible. Employers can stumble or intentionally look at a prospective employee's social media profile. However, it depends on the company's overall goals, would the activity of the employee on social media affect the employer negatively?? That's why you can draw the line.

I was going to use this video to talk to my students about the effects of social media on a job seeker but you talked way too long without getting to the meat of the matter. Keep It Simple!
