*The Concorde carried too few passengers to be economically viable. Building a SMALLER and SLOWER supersonic airliner is bound to fail.*

As a Rolls Royce shareholder, I could not be more pleased that they are not going to p*** away zillions of R&D money on a pipe dream.

One of the smartest things I've ever heard Maximus say, are people really gonna pay several hundred dollars more to cut the trip from LA to Honolulu from 5hrs to 3?? I wouldn't. At least the Concorde could fly at Mach 2+. Boom is nowhere near that speed. To be a lucrative supersonic airline, bare minimum you've gotta cut travel times in half, & do it for the price of a biz class seat. Nothing less will work, not for long anyhow.

Who actually expected this thing to fly? always was wishful thinking.

Good stuff. I knew this was likely to be a mess. Reminds me of Nikola debacle where the Hydrogen truck had no engine when investors found out many shorted the stocks and the rest lost their value. They have something in common, neither company has engines.

How much nonsense are we expected to swallow? _Environmentally Friendly + Sustainable Fuel_ ???

The airlines placed orders as an encouragement to the development of the aircraft type. It didn't cost much and didn't require much due diligence or executive time to decide to do place the order.

Sadness.... Being a realist is not the same as being negative. Thanks for the report. Please keep it up.

“The odds of that actually happening are unimaginably high.” I believe you mean either “the odds for are unimaginably low” or “the odds against are unimaginably high.”

There are people, like the Boom folks, who insist, to their credit, that the future has to include a few things that are better than today. Then there are governments.

So Rolls Royce lowered the boom. Sorry Maximus, I couldn’t resist.

Just another thought, infinitely more travel time could be saved by improving and streamlining airport procedures than could ever be saved by supersonic commercial flights. As a disabled person (I can only stand for around 10 minutes due to degenerative spinal scoliosis before my feet stop working), I now dread going on flights. As often as not, my airport transport, wheel chair or golf cart, does not turn up and trying to find a staff or airline member who will take responsibility and organise something is near impossible. The only good experience I had recently was on Europe's most disliked carrier, Ryanair. After I had pulled my cabin bag through the building site that masquerades as the car park at Marseille Airport on a 40ºC+ day, the Ryanair check in lady took one look at me and said "you look awful, come and sit on my seat while I sort you out". She then carried my case through security, bypassing the long queues and got me sat down airside. Service above and beyond and I wrote to Ryanair to express my gratitude for her help. O'Leary will probably sack her for wasting time on flying fodder (passengers).

This has nothing to do with any new supersonic planes. I just feel privileged that I actually got to see a Concorde when I was a kid. I could never have afforded to travel in one.

Hi Maximus, I tend to agree with you on the wait and see approach. The comment from one of the text pieces "Entrepreneurial Brashness" rings big bells nowadays as everyone wants to make a splash in the news to get attention, but, these projects are way more serious than that. I would like to see a supersonic aircraft carrying passengers but we'll just have to wait and see. Great show Max. Always ahead of the game. Bests, John

2:07 Rolls-Royce statement, “ Commercial aviation supersonic market is not currently a priority for us”
Yes getting all their current engines up to a satisfactory level of reliability, which currently they are not, is a more sensible priority.

The same old problems of high fuel consumption and sonic booms are the biggest hurdles for supersonic commercial flight. Heck, even with sub-sonic flight, fuel consumption and noise levels are concerns and have led to slower speeds (the 707 flew faster than current airliners).

I think you nailed it Maximus. When the two big boys on the block of jet engine design and manufacture both drop out I think that puts a stop to these programs. My gut says that GE and RR's bean counters never saw a way they could make a profit on the engines those supersonic aircraft would require.

Kudos to Rolls-Royce. They got paid to do some studies and gave Boom the flick immediately after the money ran out. Cool. A four-engined supersonic plane that carries a tiny number of passengers, and zero freight has got to be about the stupidest thing I've heard in years.

Amazing thing about Concord is it was designed almost 60 years ago and none of the commercial manufacturers have been able to get a comparable plane enter service ever since
