--- Understanding Tongues ---
For Ministry: Speaking in Tongues is a sign to the unbelievers. 1 Cor 14:21-22
During Church: Don't interrupt church w/it unless you have an interpreter. 1 Cor 14:27-28
Heavenly Language: Know that many people think that it is an supposed to be earthly language, but it is a Heavenly Language that some may HEAR in THEIR language. Acts 2:4-8
It's Holy Spirit giving you the sounds: When you are praying in Tongues you are speaking mysteries in the Spirit. 1 Cor 14:2

--- Scripture on Speaking In Tongues ---
- And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; - Mark 16:17
- So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe. - 1 Corinthians 14:22
- Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. - Acts 2:38-39
- And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? - Acts 2:4-8
(READ that AGAIN - Each man from the multitude HEARD their own language. So, when those who were speaking in tongues spoke, each person HEARD THEIR OWN language. ;) VERY important!)

--- 4 Types of Speaking in Tongues ---
1) Tongues as a Sign to Unbelievers (no interpreter) 1 Corinthians 14:21-22, Acts 2:1-18
- Language is unknown to the speaker but understood by the hearer
2) Tongues for your Personal Prayer Language (private use) 1 Corinthians 14:2-4
- Language is unknown to the speaker and unknown to the hearer as you are praying mysteries, but the speaker can pray for private interpretation 1 Corinthians 14:13-15. Edifies the speaker's spirit without interpretation. With private interpretation this gift also edifies one's understanding.
3) Ministerial Tongues (with Interpretation, public use) 1 Corinthians 14:5
- Language is unknown to both the speaker and unknown to the hearer, but interpretation is given to the speaker or another standing by so that all that hear (understand) and be edified.
4) Tongues for Deep Intercessional groaning that words cannot express Romans 8:26
- Language is unknown to the speaker and unknown to the hearer. When this type of tongues comes upon a person it comes with tremendous power to bring breakthrough or spiritual birthing of things. Galatians 4:19

---Things To Do ---
#1 Get Saved (ask for Him to forgive your sins, be willing to turn from your sinful ways, & ask Jesus into your heart to be your Lord) Read Romans 10:9-10
#2 Get Water Baptized (Acts 2:38 fully underwater)
#3 Get Baptized in the Holy Spirit... & receive the evidence of speaking in tongues according to Acts (example: "Father, on the authority of your promise, I ask for, & by faith receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit--in Jesus' Name, Amen.")

For anyone struggling with legalism..Look at it this way and it might help. If you are legalistic you really have 2 saviors you and Christ. We know that is wrong. There is only one savior and we know he is Jesus Christ. The God that created the universe and everything that is, does not need your help. The truth is we are saved by grace alone and faith alone in Christ alone. We are saved only by grace and kept saved only by grace. Regarding salvation anything outside of this is another gospel. John 3:16-18 and 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. There is no condemnation in Christ (John 3:16-18)

Long habits can be hard to break especially in cultures where we are taught we must reciprocate a gift back. Jesus teaches to enter the Kingdom we must RECEIVE it as a child. In other words there is nothing a child does when you give a child a gift. He just receives it and knows he has it, enjoys it, and nothing more. He doesn't run out to the store and try to buy a gift for you and reciprocate. Just receive and believe. That's the simplicity of the gospel in regards to salvation. Now does that mean we are no longer obedient to God and go out and sin carnally like drunken sailors? The scripture says heaven forbid! Grace is not a license to sin, it is a license to enter heaven for eternity. Our obedience to God keeps us from many problems in the world, it gives us a stronger witness and keeps us from causing others to stumble and sin, and it has everything to do with the rewards and treasure that last forever in eternity.
