Toby Gard, an animator at Core Design, wanted to make an interactive movie featuring a man searching for treasure in Egyptian pyramids. In order not to be too similar to Indiana Jones, the character was switched to a South American woman named Laura Cruz. In the end, Core wanted a U.K.-friendly name, so Core employees delved into a phone book and chose "Croft." That’s how we ended up with the name Lara Croft!
