In this iNote Anton from Micro-Measurements and Paul from Datum Electronics Ltd discuss innovations in torque measurement, discussing the successful cooperation between two companies in creating new torque sensor products and methods of measuring torque. This is a story of how collaborative brainstorming helps to look at problems of measuring torque from a different perspective and allows Datum Electronics can offer torque measurement solutions, which others cannot.

Datum Electronics Ltd, a world-leading designer, manufacturer and supplier of torque & shaft power measurement solutions, and is located on the Isle of Wight, the home of Robert Hooke who stated the Law’s of Elasticity hence “Hookes Law”, upon which all strain sensors are based. It is also the home of the foil strain gauge, developed by Saunders Roe,who secured early patents for the foil gauges, (later sold to Vishay Measurements) that includes: the first European satellite launch system, helicopters, high speed ship turbines, the first shaft power measurement system, the hovercraft, early jet fighter and flying boat technology and military radar systems.

For the last 30 years (Datum Electronics is turning 30 in 2019!), the company have focused on innovative strain gauge technology, which has been successfully used in many industries, applications and projects where measuring the power transmitted through shafts is key to efficiency and safety.
