Bo Burnham’s “All Eyes On Me” from INSIDE is hauntingly soothing due to two juxtaposing musical elements: pentatonic vocal melody sung with a detuned voice effect.

I love this song. I play it when I'm having a hard day because I know that Bo understands how hard it is to fight your own brain

Literally hypnotic. When the video is playing I can't look away, or listen to anything else.

Bo doesn't detune his voice for this song. In bts stuff he's put out you can hear him singing along in key live. The actual effect is called Formant Shifting, where you change the expression of vocal formants to give the impression of a lower voice without changing the pitch. It's a pretty interesting vocal effect, but has nothing to do with changing pitch. It also has the side effect of making his vowels sound more rounded, which doesn't happen when you use traditional pitch shifting.

Ugh I was wondering why this was so iconic. Gives me chills. Makes me feel hugged and sad at the same time.

I don't view it as saying to give into nihilism, i took it as handle your issues before you worry about trying to change the world. He talks a lot about his struggle with mental health issues and how he worked through them and also how he wants to leave a lasting impact.

My interpretation was about finding hope in the face of all the existential dread.

It’s the most beautiful song I’ve heard in years, depression is so hard to describe even to yourself, let alone others.

I could almost laugh at comments I see saying this album is scary or dramatic or uncomfortable because anyone who’s made it through a really rough time is so desensitised by their own experiences with trauma that we can effortlessly see through the screaming and yelling and complete apathy in certain songs, it doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of how empty depression feels. Blissful nihilism.

it really is comforting to know this terrifyingly overwhelming feeling of of being unable to feel anything at all isn’t impossible to defeat, not when someone as successful as Bo is clearly very familiar with it too.

I can’t ever get enough of anything that you take the time to dissect!! I became aware of this special because of your analysis and I have watched it three times already and have told so many other people to watch. The new Kendrick Lamar album came out.. I totally purchased it… but I was turned on to him because of your podcast!! Keep up the great work!! 🙌🏽

My housemates became absolutely obsessed with this song but I had to leave the room any time they put it on, I have pretty severe depression and it always managed to get under my skin, the seductive evil voice in the song is too fucking accurate

When I heard the two notes gone I was physically in love I can’t explain it- it just touched a part of my heart that’s so calming… the deep voice is so much better because they’re so soothing. Deep voices are always soothing.
