The E39 is the pinnacle of BMW Excellence wether it be the 528i, 540i or the Mighty M5 it's an automotive masterpiece my 98 528i condition is 80% perfect and for a 20+ year old it drives and feels solid like it was a 8 year old car that's a testament to BMW quality in it's design and engineering.

I had one for 3 years and absolutely agree with everything you said. It was a stunning LeMans Blue over extended leather Caramel interior. Though I think the e39 M5 is the peak of BMW, I've been drawn to the more raw and experience of the e36 M3, and now love mine as a daily/autocross weapon/winter beater/and highway cruiser. I've yet to drive a sports car I enjoy more all around than the e36 M3. I've tried many other BMWs, it just hit the mark with the perfect balance of performance, handling, comfort, ergonomics, and rawness.

I currently have an E34 M5. I often think about moving over to the E39 M5, but I feel like there’s too much character and story that’s lost when moving away from the S38 and handbuilt platform.

I have one but can't drive it due to import problems between countries, but that's another story..
Owning one of these fantastic cars and driving it 1, 500 miles a year is a crime..
If you're just interested in keeping down the miles and having the car as an investment is criminal..
