At the 96th Academy Awards, the Oscar for best documentary short film went to “The Last Repair Shop” and in the five weeks since that big night, the shop that film was named after has received more than half a million dollars in donations to keep alive the work of fixing instruments for public school students. NBC’s Liz Kreutz reports in this week’s Sunday Spotlight.

As a public school music teacher at an inner city school in CT, this story makes my heart happy. My students rent their instruments because we don't have the money to supply them for everyone. When something breaks, it's a hardship. LAUSD gets it 1000%!!!

I'm old as the hills, I recently talked with someone I went to highschool with, he said that the only reason he went to school each day was because of band.

I was fortunate my parents could afford various lessons, and finally, the band (with its additional lessons) for the six years of junior high and high school. We were just another middle-class family. Music taught me so much. If you want your child to learn responsibility, accountability, and how to be a part of a group (small or large), then public school music is a great way to do it. No one can practice for you or play it for you. You must do the work or face the consequences. You must learn how to budget your time. You must also learn to exist within a group and be a part of something where you aren't the center of attention. If you want your child to learn responsibility, accountability, and appreciation for all types of things besides music, consider your public school's programs.

Don't forget about students/instruments in the rest of the county.

This is one district. This is needed for every district. Where I live the closest repair shop is an hour away. Glad they are starting an apprentice program with the students.

Nice story. Would have been better if they talked to the technicians instead of the superintendent who probably slashed the budget that created the loss of those 20 technicians. Grateful for the people stepping in donating to help. The arts are important to the development of children and adults.

The better go to the instruments, not football 😤

Marvelous. So wonderful that not only everyday people but the District have stepped up to make sure that this worthy enterprise not only keeps open, but growing and looking to the future with apprenticeships. Thank you, God, for smiling upon these folks and their work.

Proof that humanity is generally good, and people do the right thing.

Great story. I hope you take the following as constructive criticism, any captioning needs to match up with the person talking. At the three minute mark it was out by 8 seconds. It's a great service - when done correctly.
