Katharina Zeller - Creating a patient centred mobile app using FHIR | DevDays 2023 Amsterdam

The treatment of cancer patient is no longer only focused on survival rates, Quality of Life (QoL) is considered increasingly important. For this purpose, we created an app to report QoL through a combination of questionnaires, diary entries and data from Health sensors recorded by the user’s phone.

To capture QoL we use the Questionnaire resource for established QoL questionnaires like the EQ-5D-5L, Observations for diary entries as well as data points entered by the user such as sleep, weight, symptoms, and mood. Furthermore, activity recorded in Google Fit/Apple Health is regularly transferred into Observations if the user has given their permission.

Based on the recorded activity data we calculate a score representing the user’s QoL. The score is then compared with the results from a validated questionnaire to show that the data someone records through their health sensors can be used to accurately display their QoL.
