Sir Keir Starmer said there will be difficult decisions ahead but he insisted there is light at the end of the tunnel in a conference speech aimed at injecting some hope into his warnings over Labour’s economic inheritance.

It was an attempt by the Prime Minister to balance the messaging of the past few weeks with a note of optimism amid criticism that repeated warnings of tough choices to come in the Budget and a £22 billion “fiscal black hole” have been too gloomy.

Julia says: "This speech hasn't gone down well with a lot of people."

My home town Merthyr Tydfil is now heavily populated with Romanians & Polish….not poor country’s so why are they all coming over in so many numbers? Maybe because our government will reward you for not working, breaking the law, help pay for a house. Free education. Free healthcare etc etc etc.
Just cap benefits to new comers who haven’t worked in the UK for more than 3 years and the numbers will plummet! 90% of these people are just abusing the system and here for a free ride

His dodgy accounting with the triple lock and the WFA is appalling. If the pensioners get 4% next year it will be then have been eroded by about 2.5% by inflation leaving them with perhaps 1.5% in real terms - not enough to cover the loss of WFA. And there is the major point that this winter's fuel will need to be paid for this winter, not next year.
