In this video Canadian Guitarist/producer Dean Wolfe reacts to the death of Vangelis.

A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

Vangelis will always remain someone special in my heart in terms of musical experiences. His music provided me with sublime and beautiful feelings. Great loss!

My first experiences with Vangelis would have been the ‘Cosmos’ series, although as a junior high schooler at the time, I never thought of the music composer at the time. Then when I got into radio, working at an AC station, would play his songs on occasion.

I’d best describe his work as ‘ethereal’.

Sad loss of a great talent, what a legacy though. For me the entry point was Blade runner even though Chariots of fire was slightly earlier. I have always been a great fan of that film which is such a great rewatch time and time over. It would not have been anything like as good however without Vangelis’s score. RIP man you done good.

Well done Dean. Chariots of Fire sounds great on an acoustic guitar. I believe that Vangelis used a Yamaha CS80, a synth that he was famous for playing.

I also believe that Vangelis did not join Yes because of the excessive air travel while touring. I think that there was a fear there.

I’ve got a few Aphrodite’s Child, Jon & Vangelis, and solo albums. As a fan, one of my coolest memories was sitting in Athens’ ancient marble Panathenaic Stadium watching a simulcast of his live concert across town at the Temple of Zeus in 2001. It was just dumb luck that I was in Greece that day to watch one of his rare live performances on the Jumbotron at the end of the entirely marble structure built in 144 AD. Good times.
