The author contradicts himself.

First he tells you that scientific evidence suggests that quick decisions can be statistically reliable and then he tells you that decisions that support a bias are not reliable. In both cases no one actually knows what thought processes lead to the decision, but in the case of a resulting bias, he believes that the thought process must be flawed.

I loved this book. I thought the story about the tennis coach was interesting. After so much experience in an area, it can be hard to figure out why you make a certain call. Have you read Gladwell's David and Goliath? That was my favourite.

Gladwell covered the Pepsi/Coke story so well. I had heard a lot about the New Coke failure in marketing classes at university, but none of my textbooks broke down the psychology behind the story so well.

Have you read Thinking fast and slow by Daniel Kahneman? Another great book that does a deep investigation of how external forces influence our decisions and judgments.

I'm not seeing the connection between the short and long-term thinking in regards to the Pepsi vs. Coke thing. I mean, I understand the argument you put forth (from the text), but the connection seems tenuous to me. If Pepsi was taking Coke's customers, then that seems to me that those customers did want to drink a whole bottle of the sweeter drink (rather than just taking sips). I'm thinking they didn't buy a whole bottle just for a sip or two. The only place I can see a strong connection to the short/long thinking idea is in the taste test scenario - not on a broader market share.
